Sergt. Ernest Armstrong, 19th Reinforcements, is returning by the Bhamo, due at Auckland on April 24. Lieutenant H. D. Caplen, of Hawera, who has been serving in Mesopotamia, has been promoted to a captaincy. Cr. S- M. Cornishj at yesterday's meeting of the.Egmont County Council, tendered his resignation as representative of the Opunake Riding.
Mrs. J. Brokenshire has received word (hat her son, Sergeant R. J. Brokenshire, is due to arrive in Auckland about April 24 by the Bhamo. A London cablegram reports that Mr. Pearce, Australian Minister, is in bed witn influenza. The attack is not serious, but his engagements have been cancelled for a few days. Private J. Crone, Ordinance Staff, Trenthani, has received advice that his eldest son, Kifleman W. J. Urone, Btli Reinforcements, is returning by the Corinthic which is due about April 22. Captain II Arthur, N.ZM.C, of Wellington, arrived in New Plymouth by the mail train last evening, He will act as president of a medical hoard to be held at the New Plymouth Hospital today. About UO soldiers will be examined.
Mrs. J. B. Hino received a cablegram from Major J. B. Hine, who is now in Egypt, as far as is known in the neighbourhood of Suez, stating: "Demobilisation suspended owing to Egyptian unrest." Major Hiiie was expected to return by one of the early troopships.
A Waimate Press Association message states that the Rev. .!. 1. Clarke took a severe heart attack on Thursday week, but was apparently in no danger and seemed to be recovering On Thursday, about 11 o'clock at night, he suddenly collapsed and died. Mr Clarke was inducted to° Knox Presbyterian Church about a year ago. He leaves a wife and family
