Paderewski, the President of Poland arrived in Paris on Sunday.—Cable, Mr D. Duncan has been appointed town clerk of Manala.

Corporal Eric Beauchamp is due to arrive home by the Willochra on April 15, after three and a-half yean' service. Miss Ita McCarthy, of Hurleyville, has received word that she has pawed the final of the B.A. degree. A Wellington press message reports the death of Captain Qeorge Lambert, many years with the Union Steam Ship Company, aged 70 years. A London cable states that according to the Daily Express Sir Albert Stanley, President of the Board of Trade, is resigning owing to ill-health. Mrs Milroy, late of Hernia and her mother, Mrs Tonks, of Hawera, are going to Europe on the Corinthic. Dr. Milroy ig in France. A London cable reports the death of Professor Sir William Crookes, the celebrated chemical expert and discoverer of thalmium and other radiant matter. He was born in 1832 and received a knighthood in 1897.

The Rev. J. Napier Milne, who succeeds the Rev. W. A. Sinclair in the pastorate of Whiteley Memorial Church, is expected to arrive from Auckland by to-morrow's boat, and will commence h{s ministry on Sunday next Mrs. E. Allen, of Mt. Edgeeumbe Street, has received word that her son, Private C. Allen (Bunny), arrives in, Auckland on the 20th. He is a member of the New Plymouth Fire Brigade. The Moa Road Board, at its meeting on Saturday, passed a resolution of condolence wiili Mr. Bracegirdle and family in the bereavement they had sustained by tho loss of Mrs. Bracegirdle.

Mr W. A. Curteis, headmaster of the Mangatoki school, has received word from the Registrar of the N.Z. University that he has passed in education at tho examination held in November last.

There passed away at Levin a few days ago an o!d resident of the district in the person of Mr William Whitohouse. He was born in England in 1810, and 25 years ago settled in Levin and remained tliere up to the time of his death.

Mr John Hunt who has taken a full part in the public life of the Manaia district for very many years, was on Wednesday evening presented by the people of the district at a large gathering with an illuminated address and a cheque for a substantial amount. Mr. Hunt and family are retiring to the Auckland district.

The death occurred on Saturday evening of the wife of Mr. G. R. Allen, manager of the motor department of Spedding and Stainton, Ltd. Mrs. Allen, who came out from England with her husband a few years ago, had been in 111-heaHh for a long time, and leaves two children. She was a kind and charitable womkn whose lobs will be regretted by all too knew her.

The funeral of the, late Mr. T. Furlong took place at Te Henui cemetery on Friday afternoon, and was largely at-' tended. There was a record muster of veterans, whilst Court Taranaki A.O.F, No. 4356, which the deceased joined on February 18, 1865, the night the court was opened, was well represented. The cortege was joined by additional friends and veterans at Te Henui. ChaplainColonel Evans officiated, and P.D.C.R. Tunbridge read the Foresters' service, whilst Corporal Hardgrave sounded the Last Post.

The following; appears in a recent issue of the London Gazette: On Ist October, mis, near Crevecour, 2nd Lieutenant Gideon Frederick Potts' (2nd JJatt, Wellington Regiment) platoon maintained its position under his direction when it was quite isolated by a counter-attack Later, when his company commander became a casualty, he took command at a critical period. Lieut. Potts, who belongs to New Plymouth, was awarded the Military Cross for his services on this occasion.

The death is recorded of Mr. James Riddell, who passed away on Wednesday, at the advanced age of 88 years; about 50 years of which were spent in Waverley. The late Mr. Riddell was one of the early settlers in Waverley and suffered many of the privations and hardships endured by the settlers during the Maori war When the Government grants of land were made he was given that known as Papatuku, but this the Maoris objected to so strongly that it 1 !? given tftck to them. «»<i Mr. Riddell was given a place at Karahaka as compensation.
