WAITARA.

(Front Our Own Correspondent.) Wai;tara, April 1. A cash butchery business is being started here, and if the price of moat is brought down to a reasonable price it will be a good tiling for the town, as tiie price charged for meat in Waitara si-enis to me to be excessive. •Mr K. Gribbon's new shop in "West Quay is being put up very rapidly by the contractors and. when finished," will be a great improvement to the appearance of West Quay. A meeting of the Chamber of Couimeice was held last night, at which two papers were read, one by Mr T- Buchanan 011 the feasibility of running our coal into electricity at the pit's jnjouth, at less cost than it takes to harness rivers to produce it, instancing the Mokau coal deposits as an almost inexhaustible source of supply. Mr Buchanan also dealt with the mineral deposits and iron-sand lying at our doors, and the wastefulness of sending our wool and other products out of the country to be made up. Mr Oldham read a paper on hydro-electricity, referring to ;the progress that has been made (luring the past few years in this direction, and calling attention to the many streams flowiiicr from Mt. Egmont which, if harnessed, would produce enough electricity to drive all the machinery required in Taranaki for many years, besides giving light to every household. The Waitara river scheme was instanced, which would give 2(100 horse power at a cost of ahout £4O per borse power, and would l>e a very payable proposition to anvonn with capital to work it.
