At the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr A. Crooke, S.M., 11. Rawlinson (Mr t>'Dca) pleaded not guilty to a .charge of employing .lames V. Rawlinson, who had deserted from the Expeditionary Forces. Mr O'Dea stated that defendant denied employing his brother, who, whilst hanging about the place did a little work to keep him going. Defendant had advised his brother to leave the farm or give himself up to the policeDefendant stated that his brother came to bis farm after the epidemic. He did not employ him or pay any wages- He lived in a hut and got food from the house. Mr O'Dea contended there must be evidence of employing a deserter, but no such evidence had been disclosed. He admitted defendant might have notified the police of the deserter being on the premises, but it was a difficult position for a brother to act as informer against another. The S M. held it was a serious offence against the military regulations and inflicted a fine of £SO. time being allowed to make the payment.
