The Rangitikei Racing Club was again favored with splendid weather on Thursday, and an excellent day's sport was served up. Winners were fairly easy to pick, the previous day's form suggesting that Nobleman, Vanee, Zela, and Papanui would run well forward, but the dividends were remarkably good right through. Racing commenced -with the Greatford Handicap, Inah, with Gray up, and armed with No. 1 marble, being a strong order. The favorite and Starengo dashed off first and ran together to the distance, where the Wanganui horse forged ahead and won nicely. Play Off, who began slowly, was right up third, with Madam Ristori, Hastie, and Rawakore all lying handy. To the surprise of most people Hallow was withdrawn from the Rangitoto Hack Handicap, and of the eght runners Borealis was a solid favorite. Nemaline, Zela, and Carmel Arch were prominent early, but the former was done with at the home turn. Zela got the better of Carmel Arch in the run home, and paid a false price. Borealis was flying at the finish, but was too badly placed in the early stages to have a chance. Metallum got away badly, and was in the rear all the way. ' -..v A good field of a dozen lined up for the Sandon Hurdles, Vacuum being the public elect, though good money also came for Willys Knight and Kahumangu. Hushman, Movement, and Vacuum were early in the lead, but Willys Knight and Hushman had sorted themselves out as they turned for home. A great race up the straight resulted in favor of Willys Knight by a narrow margin. Hushman was paying a great price, and had bad luck to strike such a speedy customer aB Willys Knight. Vacuum struck a fence hard, and McDonald amused the spectators by dangling under the horse's neck for a hundred yards or so before parting company with his mount. Movement finished a long way behind. Papanui, with Gray aboard, and Glentour, carried all the money in the Maiden. The latter got out first, but Papanui had joined issue at the turn, and, finishing strongly, won by half a length. Yankee Jack, Simon, and Bold Boy were the nestto finish.
With Dingle out, seven were saddled up for the Fraser Memorial Handicap. Moutoa Ivanova found most favor, but Sonnino, Nobleman, and Zola were also well supported in a good betting race. Sonnino and Zola made most of the pace, and the latter was in front at. the distance. Here Nobleman challenged, and won in easy fashion. Moutoa Ivanova was third, and Henry Clay fourth. Idle Talk was a screaming hot favorite in the Pukehou Hack Handicap, with Tiranga next in demand. Tiranga led to the bend, where Idle Talk rushed to the lead, and just as quickly subsided. Tiranga went on with it, "and lasted long enough to beat the outsider, Pomeroy. Cadet was a fair third, and Signorella, Compel, and Idle Talk strolled home in that order.
Cello and Hastie carried the coin in the Welter, and the former led Dingle to the turn. The New Plymouth horse then shook his opponent off, and, ridden out, won by less than a length from Hastie, who began badly, and was unlucky to get licked. Cello and Sweet Tipperary finished handy. After causing a heap of trouble Metallum was left at the post in the Farewell Handicap. The favorite, Vance, was first away, and made the others look like hacks. The unlucky Carmel Arch was again second, with Nemaline, Tunakohe, and Kareao next.
