A LICENSEE FINED. 1 By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court, Rosburgh, on Thursday, Win. Tansey, licensee of the GoldSelds Hotel, was charged with selling liquor to Jacob Faigan during prohibited hours. The evidence for the prosecution was that at 10 30 p.m. on February 11, Tansey Bold liquor to Fatgan and a man named Forbes Later the same night Forbes was arrested on a charga of stabbing another mnn, in the vicinity of the hotel. The defence was that Faigan was a lodger at the hotel, but the evidence showed that he lived next door. Defendant was fined the maximum penalty of £lO and the license endorsed.
BURGLARY AT RAILWAY STATION. Christehurch, Last Night. The safe in the parcels office at the railway station was burgled ttr -d the sum of £177 stolen. Th> money was intended for the purpose of paying the surfacemen employed on the Arthur's Pass line. There were duplicate Keys of the safe, and it is alleged one has been missing for over a week RAID ON "CHINESE HOUSES. Wellington, Last Night. The police to-night raided three houses in Haining Street and one in Taranaki Street, occupied by Chinamen and suspected to be haunts of pakapoo players, and apprehended seven Chinese and eleven whites. The occupiers of the houses will bs charged with keeping a common gaming-house and the other men with being found on the premises. THE TRIBUTE TO FRANCE APPEAL. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, March 28. In connection with the Tribute to Francs appeal some months ago £l4,<fiso was sent to the High Commissioner for transmission to tye French Government. Letters of gratitude have now been received from M- Cambon, French Ambassador, and M. Pichon, Foreign Minister, expressing their deep thanks for the magnificent gift, which will do much to iilleviate cases of misfortune and distress. SOLDIERS FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. ~ Wellington, March 28. The February report of the Soldiers' Financial Assistance Board states the month witnessed a further drop in all sections of the department's work. Fifty-eight new applications were received; gTants completed and approved numbered 238, the cases representing an annual expenditure of £4093 16s Sd, including 117 additional grants amounting to £1507 19s 7d, making ft grand total of 10,530 cases at an annual expenditure of £371622 9a 7d. Warrants issued during the month numbered 3914, covering an actual expenditure of £10,145 17a fld. The lessening volume of work 'has rendered it possible to release 35 officers. INFLUX OF ALIENS STATISTICS. Christchurch, March 28. The Hon. Q. W. Russell to-day gave the figures regarding the alleged influx of Asiatics to the Dominion. These show that during the period covering the years HHS to 1918 and the first two months of 1919, the arrivals exceeded the departures as follows: Hindus 222, Chinese 242, Japanese 56.
