MIRACULOUS ESCAPE FEOM DEATH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston North, March 28. A chaffeur named Purton, while attempting to board the main trunk express to-day 'before it stopped at the station, in order to secure a seat for a lady passenger, fell between.the platform and the train. Purton had a miraculous escape from death, beingcaught between the interlocking points on the ground and the compensation bar of the bogie, which projects over the wheels. When rescued from the deathtrap, he was found to be suffering from a had scalp wound, a blackened eye, an ug-lv cut under the jaw, and he had lost several teeth- Despite his injuries, Purton remained conscious, displaying great stoicism. The depression in this ground where Purton was caught by the carriage prevented him from being crushed to death.
