DISTRICT NEWS.
TARIKI, (From Our Own Correspondent.) A rumor is in circulation in the district that there is a possibility of the Government purchasing a site and setting up a post ofiice apart from the railway station. If the rumor is correct it will probably mean that Tariki will be disrated and lose the stationmaster and have a porter only, as the result of which goods required would have to be booked at the other end and fares paid to the guards. The existing arrangements are very convenient, as the farmer can now secure his mail early in the morning and again in the evening, the stationmaster being obliged to be on the premises to work the trains. The introduction of a separate building for a post office will mean i) till o working hours, so that a farmer going to the factory would be held up later in morning and would also have to get back again in the afternoon if he wished information regarding correspondence, whereas now he car. have these matters attended to when the day's labors are o'er. Jt- is more than probable that a public meeting will be held to review the whole question. I am pleased to learn that D. Oldham, of the local factory, is making very satisfactory progress after an operation for appendicitis performed at the Stratford hospital. Arrangements are well forward for the entertainment of several returned soldiers, to be held in the hall here shortly. Some acceptable outside talent has been secured, and everything points to an enjoyable evening.
