When the Moana was two days from Rarotonga, a iireman, who had been put ashore at Tahiti from the Paloona on that vessel's upward trip, was seen to jump overboard. A lifebelt was thrown so close to the man that it could have been easily seized, but no effort was made to .secure it. The Moana cruised about for three-quarters of an hour, but a heavy sea was running, and as it was getting dark nothing further could be done. The man is said to have suffered from insomnia-
