WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, March 25. A special meeting of the Borough tpouncil was held last night to meet tlie ilirec'tors of the North Taranaki Dairy lOompany, to try to arrange the difference between them as to the cost of laying pipes to the Waipapa dairy factory. The directors contended that although the price put in at the commencement of negotiations was £443 14s for new pipes, they were led to believe by the borough overseer that he had obtained sufficient second-hand pipes to put the line right into the factory, and that with these pipes the cost would be reduced by about half, or a little more than £2OO. If they had known that the scheme would cost the company £443 14s they would not have started it, as they had alternative schemes which would have been considerably cheaper. It was pointed out by the council that enough second-hand pipes had not been obtained, although the overseer thought at the beginning t'mt he had enough in sight, and that with the rise in the pi-ice of piping the cor tract had. cost the council a good deal more than tbev were asking the company to pay. The saving on the second-hand pipe? put in to the borough boundary was £4O, and the directors wore asked if the council halved ths saving on the second-hand pipes with them, would they be satisfisKl? The reply was in the affirmative, and the directors left the meeting to give the council time to decide whether tJiey would do this, but after talking the matter over outside the directors decided that the saving of £2O wa.s not worth considering, and in view of the loss the council had already sustained, they decided to pay the amount asked for (£443 14s). and thus the matter I wns amieablr settled.

The council's stables caught fire yesterday. and had it not lieen for the nrompt action of Mr .T. C. P.lanchard and Mr T. C. Wilson, who happened to pm Pby before the fire had obtained a sooi hold, the building would inevitably have been burned to the ground, but with bucket,-*, which happened bv change +o be there, the, fire was put out before a great deal of damage- had been iTonc.
