FIRES.
RESIDENCE REDUCED TO ASHES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hastings, March 25. The Elms, a 12-roomed two-storied residence, owned and occupied by Mr Joseph Truman, was reduced to ashes at 3 o'clock this morning The building was 80 years old, and the flames spread with alarming rapidity, barely affording time for Mr Truir.an, his wife and two children in night attire, to escape from the upstairs bedrooms. The fire is supposed to hav-i been started by a spark from the sitting-room grate. The furniture and contents were a total loss. The insurance on the building was ■CIOOO in the New Zealand office; on the furniture and effects £ooo in the Atlas office. The owner values the buildings at £2OOO and the furniture at £IOOO.
