PATRIOTIC AND WAR FUNDS.
NOT TO BE SPENT ON WAR MEMORIALS. By Telegrapli—Press Association. Christchurch, March •>!, Patriotic or war fund societies are not to be permitted to expend any part of their moneys on war memorial's. Upon that point the Government has taken a firm stand, according to what the Hon. G. W. Russell said to-day. A large number of applications are being received from societies to be allowed to use their funds for war memorial purposes, said the Minister. In every case these have ibeen refused. The Government holds that these moneys were subscribed for the benefit of soldiers, and not for the purpose of putting up concert halls and that kind of thing. Therefore, no consent will be given to patriotic societies using their funds for any purpose except for the benefit of soldiers and dependants.
