WAITARA.
(From Our Own Correspondent). March, 15. The public .meeting advertised for last night in the Clifton Hall to hear nn address by Mr. P. Fraser, Labor member for Wellington, was very poorly attended, about 30 persons being present. The speaker gave an interesting address from labor's point of view. A meeting of ladies of the Seaside Improvement Society was held last flight, to make final arrangements for the picnic on Thursday next. The ladies reported good success in canvassing for provisions, etc., and arrangements for the picnic are well forward. Given a fine day this year's gathering should be a great success. The Seaside Society has not yet heard how many teams are entered for the Tabor Shield competition. From the report of the Education Board's last meeting it would seem that a new school would be build at Waitara in the near future. We hope that when it is it. will be built large enough to afford accommodation for all the children instead of having to use the shelter sheds and technical school for classes. r think we can trust Mr Buchanan to look after that matter. : • The Noxious Weeds -Inspector has been very busy lately issuing notices to clear gorse, and seven summonses were Issued yesterday to persons, who had not complied with the notices. There is no doubt that drastic action is necessary re the gorse nuisance, which is becoming worse every year, and unless some steps are taken to compel owners and occupiers to clear gorse the town will be overrun by it. The relay race, open to boys of all primary schools, which is to be'run next Thursday, should prove interesting. The Waitara school boys are entering three or four teams, and'if the outside schools send in a few teams it should provide some interesting running. The writer received 8 letter ve3terday from A. J. Clarke, better known as Snotty," who is with the New Zealand forces near Cologne, Germany. He says he is having a very fair ' time now, though he will not be sorry when the order is given to return to New Zealand. He enclosed a photo of himself in Highland costume, and I must sav that he is looking very w«U
