WAR BURSARIES.
90 APPLICANTS FOR 50 SCHOLARSHIPS. MOKE FUNDS WANTED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Laßt Night The Minister of Public Health stated to-day that about ninety applications had been received for the fifty war bursariea recently offered by the War Funds Council. These bursaries are to enable the successful applicants to take any University course, including law anil medicine. The question of dealing with the applications, said the Minister, was now under consideration. The necessary reports had been obtained from the Defence Department and the Education Department with regard to each of the candidates, and a further statement would be made within a few days.
"The very large number of applica-. tions received,'' sairl the Minister, justifies me, I think, in expressing the hope that the patriots societies of the Dominion will be prepared to assist in the work that has heen started by the War Council Fund. I hesitate to make a direct application to these bodies, but I would like to say that if any of them are prepared to indicate their willingness to assist in the matter, the War Funds Council will be very pleased to confer with them, in order that, if possible, the whole of the suitable applicants for bursaries may be assisted." The Minister added that the first fifty bursaries were distributed over the four military districts as follows: Wellington 14, Otago 21, Canterbury fl, Auckland 8. He hoped to have particulars of other applications the next day.
