MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

CIVIL BUSINESS. In the Magistrate's Court yesterday, before Mr A. Crooke, S.M., judgment was given for plaintiff by default in the ease of Francis Hudson (Mr A. C. Lawry) v. Arthur Ireland, a claim for £l2 Ills (costs £1 12s (id). In the judgment summons ease Grace Burges (Mr A. A. Bennett) v. James J. Aliulford, to recover £34 Ss Bd, debtor oll'ered to pay £2 per month and an order to that iVect was made, the first payment to ne made on April 3. The default was fixed at three weeks' imprisonment. VAGRANCY CHARGES. Henry Rogers was charged with being o rogue and vagabond, and being found on the premises of the New Plymouth Gas Co. at 11.40 on Monday night, by Constable Fahey. Defendant said he could not obtain a bed to sleep in. He ha/1 applied at one boardinghouse where he had been told there was a bed, but the clothes belonging to it were in the wash-tub. Constable Fahey said that accused, when arrested, said he had been in New Plymouth for several days and had slept in'the coal shed at the gas works eacli night. Sub-Inspector Hutton said accused had a number of previous convictions on similar charges to the present. Accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labor. Daele Romance Khaerae, a young woman about 21 years of age was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, in that she- had insufficient visible lawful means of support. Accused pleaded guilty. Sub-Inspector stated the girl had run away from a circus show in Wellington on account of a disagreement with her employer and since then had lived somewhat loosely, being ultimately found by the police camped among the lupins near the Belt road.

The Magistrate suggested that perhaps it was a case for the Salvation Army to deal with and accused was remanded till to-day, in order to permit of inquiries being made in that direction.
