The offence, to which he pleaded guilty, was breaking and entering and the theft of about £2 in silver and 141b of corned beef. At the Police Court nt Richmond (Queensland), on February fi, Charles Wilks, a jockey, was charged with having unlawfully used an electric battery on a horse named Half Deck,' which involved cruelty to the animal. Evidence was given to the effect that after Half Deck won the Club Mile at the Licensed Victuallers' Race Club meeting at Richmond, a complaint was made that Wilks used an electric battery. The rider at first refused to allow'any of the officials'or the police to search him, but eventually reposed the battery. Defendant was fined £lO, together with costs amounting to ,-E5 0s Sd,
