PEACE CELEBRATIONS.

MEETING OF STEW PLYMOUTH A meeting of the general committee [for the New Plymouth peace celebrations was held at the Borough Council chamber on Friday night. There were about 25 present, including several ladies, and the Mayor (Mr C. H. Burgess) briefly welcomed the delegates. Apologies for absence were received from the Hon. O. Samuel and Mr J. H. Fowler. Mr J. W. Hayden (chairman) presided and stated that though the chief purpose of the meeting was to fix upon a programme (the sub-committee's draft of which had already been published) the- matter was somewhat difficult to determine until the expenditure could be fixed. The Government was preparing a circular setting forth the amount of subsidy to be granted, and when that came to hand the position would be better defined. At present the idea was to expend up to about £740, of.which, if present information was correct, the Government would provide £550, leaving to be raised by local effort ■ about £l9O, which he thought could very easily be done. The proposals of the committee were' then dealt with in their order. The Day of Thanksgiving proposed to be held on the Sunday was adopted, the arrangements to be left in the bands of the Ministers' Association. The whole of the proposals for the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were adopted. • It was resolved that the idea of erecting a triumphal arch should be abandoned in the meantime. " ■ The following committees and conveners were then decided upon:—Procession (Mr F. T. Bellringer), illuminations (Mr J. Clarke), Thanksgiving Services (Rev. H. L. Richards), grounds—racecourse (Mr L. A. Nolan), Pukekura iPivrk (Mr C. K. Bellringer), gymkhana' (J. McLeod), fireworks (Fire Brigade), I Children's Day (Mr If. A. Stratford), Plain and Fancy Dress Ball (Mrs E. A. Walker), returned soldiers' refreshments (Mrs C. H. Burgess, M.8.E.), children's refreshments (Miss E. Andrews) music (Mr F. W. G. McLeod). Conveners are to select their own committees. The general committee will consist of the chairman of the sub-committees Messrs J. W. Hayden, S. G. Smith M.P., and F. T. Bellringer were appointed an executive committee. The Mayor of New Plymouth was elected president of the general committee.
