THE RAILWAY SERVICE.
! STILL HAMPERED BY SHORT STAFF f ] By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Replying to Mr. W. H. Field, M.P., re the suburban train service, the Hon. Hemes pointed out that practically no lit. men have yet returned from the war to their occupations with the department, and very few were discharged from camp. With the limited staff it becomes increasingly difficult to carry on business on week days. Therefore he cannot reasonably ask the staff to work oit Sunday. To inaugurate any concession in the shape of week-end tickets would by concentrating traffic, increase the difficulties of the department, and might prejudically affect the handling of shipping and other important perishable goods traffic. Further, the granting of week-end tickets would in-
evitably bring about the reinstatement of other concession fares which are at present inoperative. He regretted the request cannot be complied with at the present time.
