Dean McKenna wrote to the effect that the committee of St. Joseph's Church were of opinion that the opinion of the borough solicitor in regard to liability for rates on stable, car-house, and motor garage nullified the principle that a church was entitled to exemption from rates on- whatever is "reasonably required" for the efficient working of the church. It was pointed out that the horse, gig, and motor-car were all necessary for visitation of the members of the church. The committee expressed the belief that the council would not put any obstacle in the way of the efficient working of the church, and they hold that their buildings were part of the equipment necessary for the efficient working of the church. It was decided that the clerk should reply pointing out that as the garage was let, and therefore revenue-producing, the previous decision would he adhered to. GENERAL. Mr. S. Hurst Seager, hon. organising director of the Town Planning Conference and Exhibition, wrote stating that he purposed lecturing in all the chief centres in New Zealand on "What Town Planning Means for the Dominion," and that he proposed to include New Plymouth in the itinerary, and asked the council if they would make the necessary arrangements for the lecture. —It was agreed to do everything possible to assist Mr. Hurst Seager in his project, so far as the local lecture was concerned.
