MEAT WORKS LOADERS' GRIEVANCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The men at the Gear works, Petone, I state that they went on duty at four this morning to load carcases for a Home boat, finished at 6 a.m., and were sent homo to breakfast to return at 8. The men's grievance at this arrangement is the loss of an hour's work between 0 and 7 a.m. On returning at 8 they requested from the foreman payment for the lost hour, and the foreman referred them to the manager, who was interviewed at 10, and stated that the men's grievance was a just one, and ordered payment for the lost hour. The men then requested payment for the two hours lost by waiting for the interview with the manager, and on this being refused they left the works. TROUBLE ON THE ARAHURA. Auckland, Last Night. Th'i trouble between the firemen and stewards on the Arahura is not settled, each side being adamant. As there is no indication of sailing, the crews have been given 24 hours' notice, find will be paid off ia-morrow. A hundred passengers and much cargo, including perishable goods, and livestock, are affected. INVESTIGATING POLICE CONDITIONS. Wellington, Last Night. Superintendent Kiely, of Auckland, Superintendent Wright, of Dunedin, Inspector McGrath, of Napier, and SubInspector Broberg, of Wellington, have been appointed a commission to investigate the pay, hours and -jbraackervf tae-jwlico service.
