GARDEN PARTY.
On Thursday afternoon Mrs. E. A. Walker entertained the returned wounded soldjers, who were in hospital, at a tnosi, delightful garden party at her residence "Dumnure." It was a glorious day and Mrs.. \Valker, who makes an ideal hostess, did everything for the boys comfort. Those who were able spent a most enjoyable time in playing golf croquet, garden bagatelle and tennis, the others being content to lie in shadv nooks as interested spectators and be waited upon by the visitors. Mrs. Georges orchestra supplied delightful music and a dainty afternoon tea was served m the dining room, the table being decorated with scarlet sweet pea Ouring the afternoon ices, cool drinks cigarettes and fruit were temptingly handed round. Mrs. Walker wore cream crepc-de-clrine blouse cream gabardine skirt, and navv hat. Amongst those present were: Mesdames D'Arcy Robertson, Crooke, Beaumont (Auckland), C. H. Weston, Matthews, Hugh Baily, E. C. Griffiths, R. Cornwall Corrie, Sladden, R. Quilliam. J. L. Nicholson, Morrison, F. J Harvie Messenger Misses Baker, Campbell, Cut ' field (2), Wade, Blundell, Brewster, Bedford, Simpson, Crooke, F. Winfield.
The Women's National Reserve invites all soldiers mothers, wives and children to the gathering at the Kawaroa Park next baturday afternoon at 2.30. This gathering, being the postponed Christmas one, will include a well-stocked Christmas tree and the soldiers' children willl each receive a free gift. Members of the Reserve are kindly asked to help towards providing the afternoon tea. A meeting of those interested in St Marys Home, Otahuhu, Auckland, was held on Friday afternoon at the residence of Mrs. A . Crooke, Devon Street West. A short address was delivered by Mrs. Beaumont, Auckland, who snoke on the three-fold aspect of the work. The maternity home, though under the control of the Church of England, is open to all denominations throughout the Dominion. The speaker also referred to the children s nursery, which is controlled bv nurses on scientific principles. The probationary nurses here can obtain certificates of proficiency as scientific nurses for children. Another feature of the home is the Campbell Nursery, where sick children and motherless babies are taken m and nursed back to health. In this connection it was mentioned that Dr. Truby King has the highest opinion of f .t 1 ! I™' 1 ™' and has hHd Photographs of the children taken to exhibit in Britain as specimens of scientific infant rearing. The meeting was very enthusiastic, many members promising to double then- subscriptions. It was" decided to hold a garden party at Mrs. Crooke s residence m aid of the funds of the home on the 20th instant, further details of which will be announced later.
