The northerners played cautiously all day and the rate of scoring was slow. Against the careful batting of the Aucklanders Wellington set an attack that was not strong, .with the result that the visitors scored well. The partnership of the day was that of llemus and Midlane, who notched 220 while associated. Two centuries were obtained—Hemus 136, and Midlane 126. When stumps were drawn Auckland had scored 424 for seven wickets.
