DEVELOPMENTS IN AUSTRALIA.' * HUGE DEATH TOLL IN AMERICA* 1 Received Feb. 28, 7.35 p.m. Melbourne, Feb. 28. The Government lias adopted th* recommendation that the hotels should reopen on March 4, and that racing be remaned on the eighth and picture shows on the tenth, under modified restrictions. This decision will probably mean the abandonment of tiie V.A.T.C. meeting fixed for March 1 to 4. 'Die Federal authorities warn the public that the influenza is likely to smoulder for months, uud they urge unity of action. In reply to inquiries by the Federal Government, the Commonwealth trade representative in America has cabled that from the end fo August to date there have been 400,000 deaths from influenza in the United States. The disease has greatly decreased, but has not been entirely eradicated. The cause and mode of spreading is unknown. Masking has been adopted, but ita efficiency has not been proved Aus. and N.Z. Cable Assoc. MORE DEATHS AT MELBOURNE. Received Feb. 2S, 8.55 p.m. Melbourne, Feb. 28. Eight deaths were reported to-d&j from influenza—Aus. and N.Z. Cable Association.
