LUXURIES FOR GERMAN PRISONERS.
STATEMENT BY DEFENCE MINISTER By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Minister of Defence stated to-day that the report that had been published that German prisoners of war at Motuihi had been supplied with whisky, eggs and fresh fruit, other than by order of the medical ollicer, was absolutely contrary to fact. Only five prisoners of war in the Dominion were entitled to purchase spirits, wines and ale. In accordance with instructions of the Army Council those officers had been permitted to purchase such refreshment in strictly limited quantities. The scale of rations for prisoners was slightlv under that for the New Zealand Expeditionary Force Ollicer prisoners, and others possessing private means, were permitted to purchase whatever l'ood they desired to supplement the ration. This privilege was conferred by instructions by the Army Council.
