It is expected that the New Plymouth Borough Council's electric bus will be completed in time to be put into commission on Wednesday next, the first day of the New Plymouth show. A movement is on foot in Wellington to accord something special in the way of a welcome to the 1500 Main Body men who are due to arrive by the Hororata about the middle of next month. Definite arrangements to that end are to be made as soon as the Mayor (Mr J. P. Luke) returns from the south, probably early next week.
The residents of Mangawhero road, Fraser road, Rotokare and Mata have, states the Argus, been for some weeks without a mail service. The Post Office subsidy, the settlers' subsidy, and the wages for newspaper delivery aggregate £ll4 per annum, but this sum does not appear to be sufficiently tempting to induce anyone to take up the mail contract. Would-be contractors say that the cost of horse feed, shoeing, etc., is too high now to allow of the work being done at the former contract price.
One-hundred-and-one and still hale and hearty. Such is tile condition of Mr Robert Rowe, of Gladstone, Wairarapa, who reached this fine old age on Friday last. On his birthday a fairly large surprise party waited upon him, and were greatly entertained by the old man's vigorous views upon things of the day. Mr Rowe's mental faculties are as keen as they ever were, and his eyesight as good if not better than a young man of the present day. He is still actively engaged in running his farm, and enjoys the best of health.
Owin® to the very disappointing entries, it is doubtful whether the intention of holding a Dominion Rifle Meeting at Trentham next month will be carried out. The programme was prepared on the asumption that there would be at least 300 entries, but only 124 marksmen have signified their intention of competing. The previous meeting was held at Trentliam in February, .1914. six months before war broke out, and over 400 entries were received. The question whether, under the circumstances the meeting wliieh is fixed for March 10th and following days should be proceeded with, will probably be decided this week.
An example of thankfulness which is in eontra-distinction to other communications received by the Auckland Hospital Board is worth recording, says the Star. During the recent influenza scourge two Chinamen, Joe Set and Joe Gnow, were stricken and were taken into the Pukekohe Temporary Hospital. The former died. The surviving Oriental has sent along to the Hospital Board, which charged 12s Cd for Set and £3 for Gnow, the money to pay the accounts. He included a donation of £2 2s on behalf of the deceased friend and £2 2s on behalf of himself. The grateful Chinaman has further shown his appreciation by supplying the hospital with between four and five pounds' worth of vegetables free of cost. PERS sofbntno
