The following letter hag been received from, Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., from the Minister of Public Works:—"You will probably recollect that you forwarded to me in November last a request from Mr. W. J. R. Avery, and several settlers of Awakino and surrounding district* that the road over Mount Messenger w metalled during the present summer. Pro* vision to the extent of £IOOO (on a& count of £3000) was made on the Publli Works Estimates this year, and although the resident engineer was instructed as far back as October 1 last to have proa-. pecting done to ascertain the extent, etc., of the metal deposits, and to undertake other preliminary work, he has not been able to do so owiug to the influenia epidemic 7 and the shortage of labor. I had hopes of being able to metal a considerable portion of the road before next winter, and am very much disappointed thai it will now only be possible to do little more than preliminary work. The resident engineer was as anxious as myie\f to push on with the work, and the delay '■ is in no way attributable to the hick of energy or mismanagement on his part'. I shall be glad if you will kindly make this explanation to the settlers, and assure them that I shall endeavor to have Operations commenced on a large scale » the early part of next summer with mechanical transport." Mr. Jennings replied to the Minister, stating that the greatest indignation is expressed at the work not proceeding this summer, and suggesting to save a storm of protests, that the worst portions of Mount Messenger "be attended to before the winter sets in. ■ The Melbourne's sale enters into fts: second week with greater bargains th'ah ever Stocktaking is in full swing and the firm is ruthlessly euttiiig prices on all summer goods lather than carry them over to next season.
