BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING OP WORKS COMMITTEE. Tho Works Committee of the New Plymouth Borough Council met last night. The Mayor presided and there were present: Crs. J. Clarke, J. W. Hayden, W. F. Short, E. Griffiths, R. J. Deare, and G. W. Browne.

The matter of the application for permission to erect cottages at the East End lteserve, which was deferred at last meeting pending an inspection of thv locality by Councillors, was again deferred last night. Authority was given to Messrs Boon Bros, to remove a cottage from Downe Street to Tukapa Road, and to mako certain additions thereto, according to plan submitted.

The Mayor and Town Clerk were appointed delegates to the Town Planning Conterence to be held in Wellington in May.

The Mayor wais appointed representative to the Municipal Conference. It was decided to instruct the engineer to prepaj-c estimates of the cost oi putting in order the street approach to the East End reserve.

The state of Smith Street, Vogeltown, was mentioned by Cr. Browne, who intimated that a sum of £7p from the £42,000 hail been allocated to that street, but i«it expended. He pointed out that at present the Education Board was building a new school to accommodate 100 scholars, at a cost of £I2GO, and the road would be used by the children attending the school. He asked that something should be done to put the street and footpath in order before the coming winter.

The Mayor stated that he understood it was the intension of the engineer to do something tltore early this year. Cr. (Irifiiths asked that, as apparently no provision had been made for the tarring oi Vaynter's Lane, something should be done whereby that street or any street might be preserved and protected when onee laid down well. He pointed out that there was probably no other street on which the same amount of building had taken place in the last year nr two.

The Mayor agreed that when a street was made as Paynter's Lane was it should be protected. He thought probably something might be done when the estimates were being prepared.
