NEW ZEALAND BJiMiND TiiK TIMKb By Telegraph.—l'resa As.ociation. Wellington, l<'eb. 11. Before tlie lnduaines Committee, Dr. J. Alien Thomson, Director of the Dominion Museum, gave evidence as to the arrangements made lor scientific research in the British Dominions, particularly in Australia and Canada, lie referred also to the organisation in the United States, France, and Italy. New Zealand was practically the only one ol Luc Allied countries which had not sei up an organisation of scientific research to keep in touch with industries. Probably the blame was due to lack of coordination between the various departments, including Internal Ail'airs, and Kducation. The matter of research had been referred by the Government to the National EiUiency Board, which asked the }-\>w Zealand Institute to formulate a scheme- The views of the institute ecu id be regarded as the wellconsidered opinion of New Zeiiland scientific men. The committee had recommended that a fund of £IOO,OOO should be invested in trust for the encouragement of scientific research. The report, with a few amendments, was approved by the Efficiency Board. The institute adopted a resolution to the effect that the board which would administer the trust fund for scientific researches should be able to do so without interfarcnuce by the (lovernment. The Minister of Internal Affairs has, however, objected to the resolution.
