DISTRICT NEWS.
MIDHERST. (From Our Own Correspondent) There was a record attendance, including many visitors, at the Town Hall ou tiie 7th "iiiat. at the welcome homo function in honor of Lance-Corporals • A. Richmond and M. P. Enwright, uud Privates A. J. Belk and W. Hartigan. Mr P Harkness, chairman of the Soldiers' Welcome Home Committee, presented each of the returned soldiers with a illuminated address, and spoke highly of the good services they had rendered. In the course of his speech Mr Harkness remarked that it had been the intention of the committee to include several other recently returned soldiers, but owing to the fact that the practice, first instituted by the Midhirst committee, of presenting addresses being now followed by many other committees in the surrounding districts, they Sad been unable to get the addresses, but another 'concert and dance would be held in the near future, so that it was merely a pleasure deferred and one that every one would look forward to- (Ap : plause). Lance-Oorporai Enwright responded on behalf, of his comrades, who were accorded cheers and musical honors. An exceptionally good programme was provided, items being contributed by Miss Anderson (overture), Mesdamcs Hatcher, Bennett and Tapp, and Mioses Martin and Revell (songs), Miss F.. Moon and S. Fitzgerald (pianoforte duet). "Messrs Innnelfnnd Riley (song). Mr.F. Foley eontributed an attractive exhibition _of magic, ventriloquism, etc., concluding wilh a cornet solo, the accompaniment l.nir.p played by Master Foley. MiScs Fuse, Moon, accompanied songs, and a very fine exhibition of dub swinging was given by Mr lots Kivell. Miss Anderson contributed dance music, and the duties of M.C. were curried out by Messrs J- Shorter and F. Carter. Amongst the ladiss who helped at supoer'ver,' Mesdames C Keightlev. Shotter, G. Smith, Carter, Tapp, McAllum,. p.p(\ SpeeyT/oenl sports who attended the recent Taranafci race meY'ting report having a r?«11v croud time, Several being rewarded for their confidence in "the mare" being able to bold her own against all comers.
