AUSTRALIAN FREIGHTS. ■ -V By Telegraph. —Press Assoeiatien. Dunedin, Feb. 8. On account of the quarantine restrictions freight charges on general cargo and timber from tho Comn'onwcsJtli have been increased by 7s Oil per ton from to-day. Also a corresponding increase in freights on coal, coke, and ore is about to be applied. It is understood that passage charges for Bimilar reasons are being raised by £3 10s per head. A QUEER MARRIAGE. Auckland, Feb. 8. At the Police Court, Patrick Francis Newton was charged wlith non-main, tenance of his wife. The defence was that he wa3 not married to the plaintiff. He admitted that he was married at Blebe Bay in February 1901 to hts wife Alma. Investigation showed that the clergyman who performed the ceremony was dead, and other witnesses were not available Plaintiff, it was stated, was a respectable woman with whom accused went through the marriago form subsequently in Wellington. Accused admitted that his real name wag Francis J W. Biillivant. He admitted a paternity order to pay 10s a week'. ARRIVAL OF PORT HACKING. Wellington, Feb. 8. The Port Hacking berthed at 7.3 ft this morning and landed some 44 naval ratings who have, been on active service in the Persian Gulf and Eastern Seas. Most of the men were on active service on the Pyramus and Philomel, and came back to New Zealand some three years ago, but subsequently were rc-d v afted to H.M-S. Doris.
