(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Waitara, Jan. 26.,

The funeral of the victims of the wreck of the Malioe took place on Sunday, there being a large number of followers. Mr E. E. Perkins read the the burial service over both the deceased, making of it a single ceremony. Mr W. T. Jennings, and Mr S. G- Smith, M's.P. were present. The coffin was covered with a red ensign, and there were numerous wreaths to show the sympathy that was felt. An inquest was held today by Mr W. Ft Jenkin, acting-coro-ner, and the jurors being Messrs Arms, Blanchard, E. Knight and H. Langman. After hearing the evidence of Messrs J. Lang, G. 11. Mellar. ami A. W. Ogle, a verdict of "accidentally drowned" was given, on the evidence. According to the testimony given by the witness called, it seems very uncertain that Capt Roberts intended to come in. It is possible he got too near the breakers and was carried in. The cargo from the vessel is being got ashore and carted up to the town to be dried and re-baled at Messrs Borthwick and Sons Nothing as yet has been done to float the boat.

A whirlwind during last night carried the top of the chimney of Mr Morgan's residence completely off. clumps of bricks not broken apart being carried away without touching the roof. No damage is reported from anywhere else in the town. Mr T. Buchanan has returned from Wellington where he has been for a week or so. His horse Rewi Poto did very welf at the meeting, winning one race and being second in another. Word has been received that Pts. C. R. and T. C. McKov, who have been on active service in France, are expected to arrive bv the Oxfordshire next week, and Mr E W- .T.frrost has arrived in Auckland and will be sent to the Xew Plymouth hospital for further treatment.
