Stratford, Jan. 26. Corporal E. Everiss, who left with the 11th Reinforcements, has forwarded to his relatives here a very unique sample of Turkish prisoners' handicraft in the shape of a snake which measures 6ft. in length and is made entirely of beads, i the back being amber, with diamondshaped markings in black, whilst the under part is white, midway being the inscription:' "Turkish prisoners, 1917." This curio is ou view in the window of the H.B. Clothing Co. A well-deserved tribute was paid to the librarian, Miss Laverty, by Cr. Thompson, at the council meeting on Monday evening. The council possesses a faithful and conscientious official who is largely responsible for the popularity of the public library, whilst the tidy way in which the newspapers are kept indicates a watchful eye in that department. During the past mouth 1020 books were issued, 1000 returned. Nine new subscribers enrolled and fees secured totalled the goodly sum of £l3 13s 3d. Whilst New Plymouth 'basked in tropical sunshine this morning, Stratford people were obliged to move round with overcoats and umbrellas. Borough men engaged on the road had no light, job standing in the rain shovelling for the most part water. A meeting of the district board of the Druids Order was held here last evening. Bro. Warcup was elected to tho chair. Bros. Jones and Lamb were elected delegates to the Grand Lodge meeting at Wanganui in March. Remits and amendments to rules to be brought up at the Grand todge were thoroughly discussed. Votes of thanks to the chairman and the local Order concluded a successful meeting.

P.A. Bro. H. Burmester presided at a meeting of the local Druids last evenuig. Four proposals were accepted for membership. At tho court this morning Harry Hance was fined 5s for being drunk whilst in charge of a horse aud gig.

Considerable activity is being displayed by the officials of the swimming club to push on the membership, and already 81 have been enrolled. A canvass for trophies has also proved very successful. Early in March a carnival will be held, at which swimmers from all parts of the province are expected to compete. Indications point to a big meeting at the Town Hall on Friday evening to hear the Canadian lecturer, Mr. W. D. Bayley. Those who wish to obtain good seats are advised to attend early. Adjutant Mcßoberts and Lieut. Bain, successors to Ensign and Mrs. Campion, received a very cordial welcome at tho ■Salvation Army barracks last evening. A wedding of local interest was solemnised in the Methodist Church this morning, when Miss Grace Everiss, third daughter of Mr. G. Everiss, of this town, married Mr. I. Nelson, of Grevmouth. The Rev. R. B. Tinsley officiated. The bride wore a cream cloth coat frock with silk Maltese collar, and a hat of crepe-de-chene, and carried a shower bouquet, whilst Miss Buth Everiss, bridesmaid, wore a dainty voile frock and crepe-de-cliene hat and had a shower bouquetMr. D. Beaumont acted as best man. The gift of the groom to the bride was a topaz and pearl pendant, and to the bridesmaid a moonstone and pearl brooch.

Parents are reminded that Mr. Tyrer, headmaster, will be at the school office on Saturday, February 1, from 10 till 12. and from 2 till 4, with regard to school pupils. Orders for railway passes will be issued on Saturday, February 1. Other details are advertised on page 1.
