Tfaiiam was the recipient of a travelling bag. a set of military brushes, and a pair of gold sleeve licka at a, pleasant little function held in the Borough Council Chambers to-dav, at 3 p.m. These were given by the Red Cross ladies and the Patriotic League conjointly. The Mayor was in the chair. In presenting the gifts his Worship said that he had known and worked with Mr Hal lam, as secretary of the Patriotic League, for about two years, and that to know Mr fiallam was to respect and honor him for liis stei'liiiL* integrity ami uprightness. They wen* very sorry to lose him. but glad for him that his employers had recognised his ability aril promoted him. The Mayor then' made the presentation. Mr. Rail am, in reply inft. said that he was viable to' reply as he would have liked, to the kind remarks of his Worship had made. All that ho had done for the League bad been » labor of love. Tlie "Patriotic l>&gtifc and Red Cross had raised about £-20,000 in the district, which was about £8 pe: head of the population, a 'very creditable performarn?o considering this was not a wealthy district. Ke wished to thank the various eoimoiitecs for the assistance they had given him i<> his work as secretary of the League, and especially the ladies, for without their hearty support and cooperation fiiis excellent result eould not have been attained. Mr Hallam said that lie hoped that lie should be able to visit- the district again before very long and it-new tlie friendihips he had made. On ti'ie invitation of the Mayor the meeting then adjourned to Mrs Howell's tea rooms for afternoon tea.
