Eltham, Jan. 35. The Mayor (T B. Crump) presided' at the usual meeting of the .Borough Council last evening. Also present: Crs. I, J. liridgcr, M. A. Whitcford, J. Ballantine, H. G. Carmen, G. W. Taylor, T C. Stanners, A. Beesley, H. H. Judd, and C. H. White. It was decided to endorse a recommendation from the Wanganui Borough Council in regard to tho Government seeing there was no overcrowding of beats with returning troops. Mr. Buries' report showed that general surface work had been carried out during the month- Regarding tho water mains, he suggested that the accumulation of rubbish in the tunnel at tho intake could be retarded by opening scouring valves ono hour each month. An offer had been made to supply a quantity of boulder stone at lis and lis 6d yard.—Report adopted and offer of stone accepted.
Sixty head of stock were impounded including 1? sheep. Receipts totalled £9 18s 4d, expenditure £1 0s- < The Town Cleric prepnred a statement showing that receipts for WIS totalled £<1075 against £4741 in 11)1". Rates collected increased from £765 to £1524, water £522 against £265 (1917, gas works £2280 against £2154, Town Hall £BB against £57. Picture takings fell from £ll3O to £9S2, but losing the November-December months mainly aceoitntf for this deficit. Licenses also showed a decrease from £ 197 to .£lls. Expenditure had increased, from "£1255 tn £1024. General maintenance worV rose from £2711 to £3s3, and tar sea-ling absorbed £553, against £417 in 1917. There was a decrease of £SO in stone and stone, breaking. The closing of the pictures by the epidemic reduced th" expenditure to £554, as against £716. The cost of gas was £1533 as against £1155. Gas works receipts rose to £2288, against £2154. Mr, H. TI. Jackson who, previouslv to joining the Expeditionary Forces was first assistant To the Eltham High School, has been granted leave without nay, and it is anticipated he will rejoin the, Taranaki Education Board teaching l staff in the enduing term which commences next week. Although Mr Jackson has been in the Forces for several months he was nevei out of New Zealand. his duties being attending to the wounded soldiers returning and reeuperating fit Potorna-
