'Die Minister for Marine, having order oil an inquest in respect of the sudden deaths o£ Dr Gumm and Miss lsbister on board the Moana, Mr. lliddell, 5..M., opened the inquiry to-day The la quiry was ordered under clause 237 of the Shipping and Seamen's ActAlfred John Richardson, of Tract", California, a passenger, deposed that wluii lie saw Miss lsbister lying on the floor he kneit down beside her and noticed that she was frothing at thu mouth. Witness felt her pulse, which was very slow. Her heart-beats, too, were very slow Artificial respiration was tried and an emetic was adminiir tared Presently Dr Grimm was brought on deck in a state of collapse, and an emetic administered, but neither the emetic nor respiration was «ucces»* ful, and footh died. Miss lsbister died in about ten mintitfcs and Dr. Grimm just before lier. When he Knelt alongside Mins lsbister he smelt something which he thought was oxalic acid He had had experience of the acid, which was used for cleaning wood, copper, and i brass. He did not now think it was I oxalic acid.
The takintr of further evidence adjourned till Saturday.
