Sir Robert Stout, chairman of the Prisons Board, was in New Plymouth yesterday, and leaves this morning for the south. A London cabi" states that the steamer Ophir has arrived at Plymouth. Mr. Massay, Sir Joseph Ward and party an well. Constable Townsend, of Eltham, who is recovering from a severe attack of in« fluenxa, is spending a holiday in N#wf* Plymouth. Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths, who was representing the Taranaki-Wang&nui district at the conference in Wellington of the N.Z, Institute of Architects, returned to New Hymouth on Saturday General Pau left Dunedin for the ;ioith yesterday much benefited by his rest. Under medical advice he will abstain from attending any public functions for some time.—Press Assn. At the Salvation Army Hall on Sunday night Cadets Ilutchins and Barkley were farewelled prior to leaving for the Training Garrison, Wellington. They left by yesterday morning's train. Commandant and Mrs. Rowlands will be staying on for another term in New Plymouth. Mr. and Mrs. A. Hooker, of New Plymouth, have received the pleasing intelligence that tlieir son, Private A. C. Hooker, of tho 38th Reinforcements, has | been awarded a Military Medal for gallantry on the field.
Mr. J. Sheppard received word though the .Minister of Defence yestorday that ' his brother, Lieut, r. \V. H. Sheppard, D.C.M., hid been admitted to hospital in London on January 16, suffering with pleurisy. Lieut. Sheppard was previously gassed and had also recently recovered from an attack of enteric fever.
The Rev. vY. A. Sinclair leaves by the Rnrawa to-night to attend a meeting of the Missionary Committee of the Methodist Church, at Auckland. He returns on Friday morning. The appointment is announced of Mr, C. W. Batten, prevalent of the New Zealand lie turned Soldiers' Association, as M Repatriation Olli.-er for the Wellington W Military District, comprising the whole of the Wellington, Hawke's Bay, and Taranaki provinces, a.nd part of the Gi»borno district.
Mr. E. Parrott, of Eltham, con templates leaving for a trip to England about July next. He has taken a keen interest in municipal and other duties of that tov.'n.
Mr. Edward Brooke-Smitih, a -wellknown resident of Auckland, died at his residence, Paruell, on Thursday, in his eighty-first year. He was for many years interested in patents business, and at the time of his death was manager lor the Hughes Patent Agency. He is survived by his v.idow and a growu-up family Mr W. S. Percy, the well-known comedian, has received an opportunity to appear in a star role at a big West End theatre in London, Mr Percy has made several tours of the English provinoes and Scotland in "High Jinks" and "The Boy." The musical play in which he will appear is founded on the farce "Betsy," and Mr Percy will play Dawwaiting the librefto. Recently Mr Percy had an offer from ,T C. Williamson, Ltd., to return to Australia, but preferred to remain in England for the present
