(From Our Own Correspondent.) ITawera, Jan. J7. Mr. G. W. Taylor, chairman, presided at the monthly meeting of the Hospital Board held yesterday. The inspector reported fouT cases of diphtheria during tho month, three in the borough and one in the county, also three cases of cerebrospinal meningitis. Buildings used as temporary hospitals have been disinfected. Southland Hospital Board desired urging the Government to provide a scheme of superannuation for members of the nursing profession, on the lines of school teachers and other officials, — The board approved the suggestion. Contributions of £1 each were received with thanks from Mr. W. H. McCarthy and the Massey-I-larris Co. The matron reported that the stud was still short-handed, two vacancies remaining to be filled A letter on maternity and child welfare was received from the Minister o; Health, but consideration was deferred, the chairman remarking that it would probably come up for discussion at the conference.
A sitting of the S.M. Court was hold this morning before Mr. Wyvern AVilson. S.M A Maori, Billy pleaded guilty to a charge of committing a breach of the peace. Constable Dudily, stationed at Kormanliy. related what he saw of the disturbance. Defendant, in reply to the K.M., stated he was in a billiard-room attached to a store, with Wae Wac. He owed the latter 23 fid, and as a result of a conversation tlie\ had a struggle. The S.M. fined Ka?a £2 and costs 7s, and Wae Wae 20s, remarking that Kapa, who looked a man of 30 years, had quite a number of convictions against him, mainly foi breaches of the licensing laws. He anvised the native to take out a prohibition order, and said that if defendant .again came before him ho would pTobablv- send him to a home for a couple of years. Defendant must pay his debts and keep away from drinking. A heavi- gale prevailed yesterday awl towards morning rain fell, but to-day has proved pleasant, sunshine predominating
