CORRESPONDENCE.
CABLING MONEY TO SOLDIERS.
To the Editor. Sir,—A paragraph appeared in Tour columns a few days ago to tho effect that it had come to the notice o£ Air. Smith, MJ?., that it cost a, woman £2 to cable £lO to a soldior in England. With commendable promptitude, Mr. Smith got into communication with the Government and obtained the information that the Defence Department is prepared to cable sums not exceeding £lO, not more frequently than once in six months, at a chwge of 10s, Stmt it will only be paid to tl.o soldier when on leav#.
What a splendid arrangement! Apparently the Government have not yet discovered that for a long time past, if not since the commencement of the war, the banks in New Zealand (or some of them) have been accustomed to send money Home to soldiers free of any chaTge except the actual cost of cabling, and without any vexatious restriction as to doling out Only last week the writer paid 14s 4d to the National Bank for remitting £ls to a relative at the front. Directly the cable reached London the bank would obtain tlie soldier's then address from Base Records, and a letter would be sent to him intimating that the amount was at his disposal. Thia is one of the ways in which the New Zealand banks have been dom° their bit to help thirgs alosg.—l anT etc- ' Gujarat,.
