DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIP. '*>

By Telegraph.—Press Association 1 Auckland, Last Night. The Dominion Tournament was continued to-day, when the Paira Championalnp Match was commenced. There are 2G4 competitors in this championship, comprising 132 pairs, and including some of the strongest combinations in New Zealand. The players were split into 22 sections, and only three rounds were completed. The remaining two rounds will bo completed to-morrow, and in the afternoon a beginning will be made with inter-seetional play. The full rinks will lie commenced on Monday.

At the close of the first day's play in the Dominion Tournament, the Stratford players enjoyed a fair'measure of success in the Champion Single*. The result of play in which Taranaki lUowlers were engaged is as follows:

In Section A, H. Foc-kes (New Plymouth) 14 lost to Davidson 13, and lost to Nixon 24. W. Franks (Stratford) 21 defeated Hardley 17, totalled 17 against Graham's 13,, and scored a third win with IS points against Black 17. In Section B, Campbell Jackson scored a win and two losses, defeating Hardley 21-17, and losing to Mcßobie 28-15 and Crowlmrst 20.13.

'Die club champion, J. S. Rowe, had a successful day in Section C, defeating Ivil -23-17, Banks 17-10, Jury 19-17. R. McK. Morison was successful against Everist 19-14, but lost his next two games—against Jury 21-11 and Banks 21-19.

Section D had two Stratford players, but neither accomplished much. W. Harris defeated McKay 23-19 and lost to White 19-16. George Sangster lost to Walker 14-9, and his second defeat came from Gallagher, who ran to 22 against George's lit.

The veteran J, Masters had a better run in Section E, the close of the day's play seeing the Deputy-Mayor scoto two wins and narrowly miss the other. His totals were:—Against Kumraer 20-22, v. Hilton 21-17, v- Darsley 20-18. Way in Section F was disastrous to N. J King, who was eclipsed in two bouts—against Kelly, going under by 14 to 20, and Allan 17 led by 2 points (15) in the other game.

Section G had some fine players, and S. Sharp did well in registering two wins against one loss. The latter was against Walker 13-10, and his wins against Horton 22-21 and LaraS 19-17.

Two Stratford players are engaged in Section K, according to the Star. J. W. McMillan lost to Marriott 12-21 and defeated Garrard 19-17. T. A. Nicholson lost to Bray 15-6, and had an easy victory against Lusher 27-14. Later news indicates that Walker (Ponsonby) is leading, and Sharp (Stratford), with live others, comes next with one loss. Sharp's loss was against ■Walker.

ITTZROY CHAMPIONSHIP. T!ic following matches in the first round of the Fitzroy Club championship have been completed:— Price beat Healy, Abbott beat Bartlett, Rcnnell beat Bennett. HAWERA CHALLENGE FERNS. In a match for the challenge ferns on the, Hawera bowling green oil Wednesday afternoon, the holders (Sama, Lewis, Brunette and Parkinson) were defeated by Payne, Adamson, Hodge and A. Robertson by -21 to 13 points. i TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. Entries for the Taranaki Bbwling Tournament, which opens on January 27, close to-night at 8.30. There is likely to be a large entry of outside clubs from Wellington, Wanganui, and ether places.

A 1 Eltham on Thursday, In addition to the "friendly" matches, there was also a "pins" match and a match against a visiting rink from Stratfor3. The Stratford players met with persistent illluck and lost by 20 points, the scores being as follow:—Stratford: Woodhead, McAlister, another, and ftanJrup (g), 9; Eltham—Haplin, Manley, Johnson, and Cronin (s), 39. In the "plus" match the challengers were successful by one poiijt. After being down for several heads, they won the last head by 4 points, just securing victory. The holders are thus disposed after being unbeaten for just one year The scores were: ■ Holders—Stewart, Death, Ross, and Ju3d (s), 21; challengers—Carman, Towers, Carter, and Drayton (s), 22.—Argus.
