TARANAKI COUNTY ROADS.

COMMITTEE OF INVESTIGATION ■«. SET UP., . '..,. ,

The matter of the toll-gate proposed to be erected by the Taranaki County Council was referred to by Cr. Lawrence et yesterday's meeting of the ««ouncil. who said that as nothing very delinite had been done yet, he doubted the wisdom of going any further ii>to the question until the council decided what class of roads they intended to put down, aa that would be one of the first questions that would 'be aaked by the Minister, in seeking his consent tc the toll-gate. It was evident that the present clas3 of roadway was not suitable for the traffic of the county, and the question appeared to be whether or not the council would proceed to lay down concrete or tarsealed roads. There did not seem time at an ordinary meeting of the council [to go into the matter of road construction, and he was of opinion that a committee should be set up to go into the matter and report to the council, or, if necessary, call a special meeting of tie council tc deal with the question. Cr. Wooldridge, in supporting the proposition, said that something would have to ho done soon in regard to the county roads. The South Road needed ;~amaking now. It wa.s'wp f uo"e gWsg THZii the matter without the fullest information and without giving careful consideration to every detail, because the whole future of the county roads might depend upon the decision arrived at. With regard to tar-sealing he thought they could get all- the information necessary from neighboring counties. Hawera county was probably the foremost in the Dominion in the matter of tarsealed roadways. With regard to the concrete roads, he did not know of any in New Zealand, excepting an experimental strip pu£ down in the Kairanga county, and that, he believed, was 30ft. wide and .had cost nearly £3O per chain. Some discussion then followed on the question of the method of construction of concrete roadways, after which Cr. Lawrence moved and Cr. C. Andrews seconded, that a committee consisting of the chairman and Crs. Morton, McAllum, Wooldridge and the mover, be appointed to consider the matter and report to next meeting of the council, and, if thought necessary, to recommend the holding of a special meeting of the council for the purpece of considering the question. The motion was carried unanimously;-
