OOMMWXEB, Stratford, Jan. 7. Mr. J. W. Boon (chairman) presided at the meeting of the School Committee held last evening. Others present were: Messrs Lawn, I). McMillan, Foster, Pinhey and Clarke.

The chairman, touching on finances, read a statement showing that the receipts for the yen- totalled £387 5s lOd and the expenditure £379 Gs fid, leaving a credit balance of £7 19s 4d; but against this were several claims that would more than absorb the amount. Probably the best means would be to hold a concert, but nothing definite in this direction was decided upon.

Mr. T. H. Penn, who has been secretary for 25 years, forwarded his resignation owing to pressure of other work. A resolution was carried accepting the resignation with regret, and also that a record of appreciation of Mr. Perm's long service and faithful work be placed on the minutes. The position of secretary was then offered to Mr. H. L. Betts, who, however, declined it. A report from the visiting committee indicated that the schools had been thoroughly disinfected and general repairs effected at the school and baths.

The question of a seaside picnic was discussed and, as a result, the stationmaster is to be written to as to whether there is a likelihood of accommodation being provided for the journey to New Plymouth on Thursday, March 13.

Stratford Oddfellows have followed the lead of the Eltham Order in filling the chairs for the next term mainly by ladies, as the election of officers resulted: Q.M., Sis. Thompson; N.G., Sis. For a few minutes I attended the stock sales here to-day. A farmer stated that prices were much easier compared with the same cattle last year. Stock yarded, however, appeared to be in poor condition, but those coming oil the hills should pick up a bit. A sight r&rely seen nowadays was that of five bulloelc teams slowly moving up Broadway. A string of 30 bullocks vpked to drays was a common sight 15 vlpars ago, but good roads and motorcars have made bullock drays a thing of the past and a novelty to town boys. Land agents are notified by advertisement on page one that Mr. Franks' property has been withdrawn irum the market.

Whilst it is satisfactory to record good business during the holidays, Mr. a. Ji. Jame3 desires to make known that lie is still offering ladies' handbags at lowest prices. If in need of a portmanteau purchase here and save money. Do yon desire to present the wife, sister, or sweetheart with a watch, bangle, brooch or necklace? Mr. C. E. James v.ill have the article you require. For toys his variety cannot be beaten, and for Doulton ware, vases, etc., his prices defy competition. Call and inspect. An invitation to all, and no one pressed to buy.—Advt.
