On Saturday [William Lawrence, a youth employed as messenger by the brigade, was an-ested on a charge of setting fire to a house in Don Street. DEFENCE OEETCE APPOINTMENTS.

Sir James Allen says that General Richardson is coming out to be officer in charge of the administration- This post was one of Lord Kitchener's recommendations, and was about to be filled when the war started. He is not coming to supervise demobilisation. As to General Robin's retirement and General Chaytor's rumored appointment, the Minister refused to saj> more than that there were several officers who might s>e considered.
CUSTOMS REVENUE.
Auckland, Jan. 6. The Customs revenue throughout iho Dominion for December totalled £230,311, beer duty beiilg £21,764, compared with £1,278,680 and £23,075 for the previous December.
