THE SHIPPING TROUBLE.
(UNION CASE.
LITTLE PROSPECT OF EAELI SETTLEMENT.

The (shipping trouble remains unchanged. Present indications give little prospect oi an early settlement. There are now seven vessels held up, including the Island steamer Levuka.
. The position, so far as the Union Company is concerned, centres round the men's claim for £1 a day. If they would waive this, any other little points involved could, it is stated, easily b* overcome, and an early settlement readied.
The company's manager Bays he bai not been able to ascertain exactly wist term* the men want In the beginning they asked for better quarters. These were granted. Then they requested mom pay, and finally £SOO insurance under such circumstances that it was Imppi* aible to deal with the dispute. Mean* time the company Bent a letter to fit# Seamen's Union, asking for a definite statement of claims. A meeting of the Transport Union discussed the situation and it is understood favored the men's demands.
The Durham, which journeys viaSrlt- . bane, took over a hundred New Zealand passengers, and the Port Lyttelton abaut •' fifty.
The Suevic is expected to leave Melbourne via Hobart for Auckland MOW time this week.
