WAITARA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Waitara, Jan. 2. The weather, the one subject one always lias to discuss, lias not been very favorable for holiday makers during the New Year. There is very little of summer in it aB yet. Owing to the inclement weather, the picnic at the beach arranged for to-day has had to be abandoned, at least for the present; it. may be arranged for in 4 week or two. The seaside has been rather unlucky in its choice of a day for its picnic, so far, last year and this year having both proved unfavorable. The really big day at the beach will be on the occasion of the Tabor Shield competition, which, I understand, will take place some time in February, when we hope to be favored with better v.eather conditions.

A social and dance are to be held tonight to make use of the good things provided for the deferred beach picnic, and to help the funds of the society as much as possible under the circumstances.

New Year's Ev? passed off very quietly here, some of the boisteroitsucss and high spirits which, on other occasions, have resulted in the taking oft' of gates and other practical iokes, seems to have been sobered down, probably by the responsibilities which the war has entailed upon \is and the saddening effect of the recent epidemic. There are still a few cases of influenza here, but it is being controlled again, and there does not appear to be any danger of its spreading as it did before.

The freezing works are operating again to-day, instead of laving the usual two days at the New Year. I expect now that the New Year holidays are over, cattle and sheep will both 'he coming in in large numbers, keeping the works going at full speed for the next few months. Gaustad and Marlow's addition to their business premises is nearing completion, and when finished will he a great convenience to the clients of the firm. The auction room is to be upstairs, to which the goods to he sold will be conveyed by an electric lift. It will be almost double the size of the present room, and should enable customers to do business under much more comfortable conditions than at present. 1-ie firm is to. be c-ongratiilated upon the enterprise shown in putting up men a fine building, and I think they will find the confidence shown in the town will be fully justified.
