A NEW YEAR'S MESSAGE.

FROM THE GOVERNOR TO THE PEOPLE. By T«legr*ph—Press Assaciatio*. Wellington, Dec. 31, The following is the New Year message from the Governor-General to the people of New Zealand:—

"The hope we all expressed to one another when 1918 dawned has, through the blessings of Providence, been fulfilled, and peace stand 3 on the threshold of 1919. "To all Nov/ Zeolandera at Home and abroad, Lady Liverpool and I fiend our heartiest greetings for a glad New Year. May it bring success to all and comfort to those who,' through four and a half years, have faced all the tribulations which war and pestilence bring in their train.

"Our rejoicings for the cessation of hostilities were marred by a scourge, the visitationa of which have overspread the whole world, and to those whose homes have been afflicted we tender our most sincere sympathy, while to those who have labored so ceaselessly ajid unselfishly, in the face of great difficulties, "we tender our heartiest congratulations, and admiration for the efficiency with which the disease was fought. "At this moment our thought is iiot for past, but for the future which lies before us all, "The past has taught much, and our King and Queen have told us in their messages to the Empire that we must not allow lessons which we have learned in tribulation to be forgotten. Tho sacrifices of years of war have .been heavy and wo owe much to those who have stood for all that makiea for liberty and righteousness. "May we not resolve 'by duty we owe to them during this period of reconstruction, and for ever, not to relax our efforts, but to work whale heartedly so as to banish every reproach of which we have been guilty in the past. Carping at failures will not achievo success, und will only arouse bitterness. It will not bring the dead back to life or prevent mistakes which have been made. "Another milestone has been reached. We are all workers. We have stood side by side in affliction. Let us remain shoulder to shoulder in times of peace, not forgetful of the past, but confident for the future. LIVERPOOL', Governor-General.
