BOWLING.
JJEW YEAR TOUKNiAMENT. ; I FIRST DAYS PLA£ • As was the case at the last New Year touaituaeni, so it happened yesterday that raiu interfered considerably with the first day s play. The morning broke dull and threatening, and thougn a commencement was made the first round was scarcely half through before heaw showers compelled a suspension of the game for upwards of an hour The'ram held up again, however, and play was continued, the first round being completed before fcht luncheon adjournment. The play was, however, somewhat heavy, the rain making the green* very hold" ing. Further showers in the afternoon made the conditions generally disagreeable, bowling under cover of overcoats and umbrellas being anything but enjoyable, while, the wind also made good play difficult.
Twenty-one rinks had entered, and these were divided into three sections of seven rounds each, which were distributed over the three local greens. One of the rinks from the town green defaulted, and tlie plaoa was filled by a team of Stratford bowlers, consisting of Messrs Murray, T- 0. Fookes, 6. Smart, and J W, McMillan. All the section games are of 16 heads each, semi-finals and finals will be of 21 heads. Mr J. D. Solo controlled the game at West End, Mr. 0. Firth at tiis town green, and Mr. F. J Hill at Pitzroy Four rounds In each section wert completed yesterday The remaining rounds of the sections, semi-finals, and finals, will be played to-day, commencing at 9 a.m. Following are the results of yesterday's play:-,
