MINE WASHED ASHORE.
ON O'AOMJI BEACH* Another naval mine was wasted up 1 and discovered on the ibeach at Oaonui on the morning of Christmas Day- A 1 Maori made the discovery and reported the matter to Constable O'Neill, at RaIhotu. The find was reported to the 'Naval Adviser, and a returned soldier was placed to guard the mine, pending instructions regarding it. It was also reported that a bottle containing some letters had been found in the vicinity. The Naval Adviser, who said he had been in communication with Mr W. E. Wright, chairman of the Egmont County Council on the matter, stated that he had instructed the local Collector of Customs to obtain the* letters and forward them to hie office.
The mino is of a conical shape, and projecting from the top surface are five fuse-caps. It is of copper casting, with dial plate ancForage, and is stamped with the figures 18/108. In close proximity to the mine were found five life(belts, each stamped B.A.M.C- and bearing the number 52076. On .one of the belts is the name A. A. Roberts.
