SHORTAGE OF QUALIFIED SEAMEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last 'Night. The Seamen's Union executive has decided not to accede to the request of the Union Company, that, in view of the shortage of firemen, unqualified men, now serving on vessels as trimmers, bo permitted to sign articles as firemen, and unqualified men to sail as trimmers. The union, in the interests of the travelling public asd the crews, does not desire any suspension of the provisions of the Shipping Act in regard to the men's qualifications, aud suggests to relieve the shortage by the release of men now serving terms of imprisosment for minor offences, under-four-monthsT, inmates of inebriates homes, and conscientious objectors.
