THE ASSASSINATION, PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT FORMED. London, Dec, 16. A Lisbon message stateß that President Paos was assassinated at midnight while going to the railway station, en route to Oporto. Three revolver bullet 3 hit Sonor Paes. The infuriated crowd lynched the assassin. Senor Paes died in the ambulance station.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc, and Reuter. Tho Portuguese Legation announces that a Provisional Government will be formed under the presidency of Senor Castro, Minister of Marine and Foreign Affairs. Parliament is meeting on December 16.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. ASSASSIN NOT LYNCHED. HIGH POLITICIANS IMPLICATED. , CITY CONTINUES AGITATED. ' Received Dec. 17, 7.50 p.m. Lisbon, Dec. 16. It transpires that the President's assassin was not lynched, but badly injured, before being arrested. The police fired a volley, killing three persons. An accomplice named Jose Costa—a Democrat—has been arrested. He declared that several others, including high politicians, were implicated. Antonio Paos, brother of the President, was wounded by a sabre in the confuBion after the assassination. It is believed the assassin belonged to the Yo»w>s Republican League. It is understood that Senhor Barhoza Minister of the Interior, temporarily succeeds Senhor Paos. The whole city continues agitated. Both chambers have been summoned.
