HAWERA COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING. " Crs. Tarrant, Winks, Washer, Linn, Williams, Hawken, and Lysaght were present at the monthly meeting of the Hawera County Council. The chairman (Cr. Murdoch) was unable, to be present at the opening, Cr. Tarrant acting as chairman until Cr. Murdoch arrived. METAL REQUIRED. A petition was received from settlers desiring the Council to raise a loan of £l-200 to metal Maiie, Ilium, and Rata Streets. Cr. Winks slated he was agreeable to the loan being secured, but desired it to be understood that the council had other work to attend to, and there was a general shortage of labor. The work re-quin-1 by the petitioners would have t.o bi taken up in turn.—Application to be made in the usual quarters for the loan. INFLUENZA EPIDEMIC. The Premier, notified the council that the request for a grant from the consolidated fund in connection with the influenza epidemic would be considered by Cabinet at the earliest opportunity. The Mayor of Christchuroh also foTwarded a telegram, stating there the ' council had requested tho Government to make a grant to relieve necessitous cases resulting from the influenza epidemic, and desired the Hawera Council's support.—The chairman stated that they had no idea of what was required, but it was every evident that all parts of the Dominion were feeling the effects. Cr. Winks stated that, as far as necessitous cases were concerned, these wete being relieved as far as possible by public subscription in the stricken areas. The Government, having promised to consider the question, the letters were received.

ABOLITION OP TOLL-GATES. Mr. 0. A. Wilkinson, M.P- for Egmont, forwarded a copy of his Bill to provide for the abolition of toll-gates. Cr. Tarrant did not think the Bill had any chaise of going through Parliament. Cr. Winks thought the member for Pates should be instructed to oppose the Bill, and moved in that direction.—Carried. WORK ANtD WAGES. The Minister for Public Works notified that o.T) additional Is per day war bonus was being granted to all wageearners and co-operative workers in the •Dominion, and subsidies would thus "pp. paid on 12s -per day instead of lis as in the past.—The letter was received, a councillor remarking that there was not much chance of getting men to go into the backblocks to : work at 12s per day. ENGINEER'S REPORT. ■ A. Muggridge. county engineer, reported that the piers on the small bridge on the Makino Road had beeen procured and the work of erection will proceed when things are more settled. The prevailing epidemic had disorganised the work of the county, there being quite a number of employes down with itThree of the staff —Messrs H. Penman, C. West, and A. .f. .Courtney—hnd succumbed to the epidemic—Received. INFLUENZA VICTIMS The reference to the -loss o:i three council employees mentioned in the engineer's report was mentioned by the chairman, who expressed regret that the council had lost r-uch faithful employees. ■He moved that letters of condolence to the widows and other relatives be torwarded—The vote was carried in silence.
